Our workshop is open to all those who seek an adventure in self exploration and spiritual transformation at Round Oaks Creative Center and Penn Park. We journey in the Round Oaks Expressive playroom, explore the woods, be with birds, rocks and river that border the quiet shade garden overlooked by St. Francis and a large healing crystal.
This weekend, psychotherapists, art therapists, play therapists and sandplay guides have an opportunity to deepen their professional healing practice and renew their group play therapy skills as they journey within our small intimate group designed to experience facets of the transformational journey within the network of nature’s living systems.
Expect drumming, movement, drawing, dreamwork, Sandtray-Worldplay, Nature-Worldplay, meditation, storytelling, totems and/or ST-WP healing altars. With playfulness, we follow the many pathways into the inner and outer landscapes of our Life. We share our stories of the seasons of our Lives in our communal Sandplay Circles, we each discover, affirm, and consciously shape the sacred fire that has sustained our life. We form a more consciously empowered connection to the ancestors and the beings that guide us in the inner- and the natural world. We re-align ourselves with our unique gifts, values, passions and purpose.
Everyone brings: A journal for your stories, camera, small drum or rattle-like instrument, 20-30 labeled images in a basket, 5 photographs of seasons of your life, 5 natural objects from your own neighborhood; a sandtray with sand; and your favorite food to share for a potluck lunch on Saturday and Sunday. If you cannot bring sand, let us know in advance and we can provide it.
Vision Quest Sandtrays may be ordered up to 12 days prior to the event ($55). Visit www.vision-quest.us and www.vision-quest.us/vquisr or contact Gisela at sandtrayworldplay@gmail.com.

Judith Rubin writes the forward to this volume of articles by different art therapists. She opens discussing the use of art and creative acts as the means of finding solace and reparation in the midst of daily stress and traumatic events. Creation in the form of visual arts, writings, dance and music have long been used as a means to give voice to the ineffiable experiences of trauma. Art is a language that is more accessible, more flexible, adn more inclusive to express the multiple layers of feelings and contradiction within those feelings that arise from trauma.
I look forward to reading the collection of articles by trauma specialists.

Dear Affiliate Chapters,
Greetings from the ATCB! This letter includes some of the highlights from our Spring Board Meeting, projects that we are working on, and updates on ongoing business. The Art Therapy Certified Supervisor (ATCS) application has just become available on our website. This new voluntary credential has been several years in development. The ATCS is designed for ATR-BCs providing art therapy supervision that are interested in having their training and expertise in this area recognized. We hope that all ATR-BCs will review the requirements and continuing education necessary to obtain and maintain this new credential at atcb.org. If you have any questions, please contact Rita Maloy, Executive Director at the National Office, or e-mail her at maloy@nbcc.org. The most recent issue of the ATCB Review contained a new column on Best Practices in Art Therapy. The first article of this new feature is on risk management strategies for supervision. The ATCB Review is available emailed to all credential holders and may be viewed and downloaded from the ATCB website. We hope this information will be useful. The ATCB Board of Directors has adopted a new non-discrimination policy. The ATCB is committed to operating in a non-discriminatory manner and feel that this new statement is up—to-date and inclusive. You can find the complete Non-Discrimination Policy please visit our website and it will be included on all applications and future ATCB documents. As you know, the ATCB is working with our management company to seek approval of the ATR-BC credential program from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The approval process is extensive. Bill More chairs this Ad Hoc Committee and provides an update on our progress in the Spring 2009 ATCB Review. NCCA approval informs the public that the certified body has undergone a comprehensive outside review and meets the high standards of the National Organization of Competency Assurance (NOCA). Watch your ATCB newsletters for further updates. Something that may interest your members who are ATR-BCs is a new service offered by the ATCB. It is a pre-review of continuing educational credits (CECs) needed for recertification. The fee for a pre-review is $25. Those wishing to use this service should contact the National Office to inquire about the lead time necessary to take advantage of a CEC pre-review. Our Fall Board Meeting is scheduled for October 23rd – 24th. If your Chapter has a specific concern or request of the ATCB, please let me know. As your Liaison, I will present your question or concern at that meeting and provide you with the Board’s feedback. You may reach me at good@atcb.org. You also may contact Rita Maloy at the address above. Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Respectfully, Deborah Good, Ph.D., ATR-BC

DESCRIPTION
The mandala is a circular drawing, well known by Jungians as an indicator of internal processes. Jung referred to it as a “cryptogram (coded message) concerning the state of the self.” This mandala course includes concepts from psychosocial, physiological, and spiritual perspectives as they relate to our understanding of the meaning of colors and images found in mandala drawings.
Participants will be introduced to the mandala drawing and learn how to use it as a diagnostic and healing tool in work with others and for themselves. This course will include the historical background of the mandala form as seen in nature, art, myth, architecture, religion and ritual. The format will include lecture, illustrative slides, film and experiential activities including mandala art and poetry writing. It is based on Kellogg’s theory of the 13 Archetypal Stages in the Great Round of the Mandala, a comprehensive model for the development of human consciousness that fits into all cycles. Kellogg incorporated states of consciousness research with Jungian theory and cross-cultural studies, and theorized an organized system based on form, color, and symbols for understanding mandala drawings. This developmental model includes issues around birth, life, death, and rebirth and provides a map of human consciousness and evolution.
This training is for therapists, especially art or expressive therapists, or others in the fields of mental health, pastoral or spiritual counseling, or those interested in knowing more about this subject for their own growth and healing.
Please send a non-refundable deposit of $75 to Phyllis Frame, 1443 Glenside Green., Charlottesville, VA 22901. Upon receipt of the deposit, a confirmation letter will be sent with lodging information and directions to the center. For further information, please call Phyllis at 434-973-7543 or email: pframe79@aol.com

Interesting quote of Rose in his talking about similarity’s between the structure of internalization and that of art. He talks about how art is the dynamic equilibrium of opposites, of each needing the other for its fulfillment. He cites the examples: tension and release, control and ambiquity, variability and unity and continuity and discontinuity in time, space and personal identity.
Aren’t we that as well? I mean as humans – are not we really the dynamic equilibrium of opposites, a constant interplay between tension and release, control and ambiguity, variability and unity, continuity and discontinuity, and I would add vulnerability and strength, loss and gain, permeability and boundaries, fear and fearlessness. Existing on only one plane without the other would be but living half a life, an unbalanced life. Does not art therapy strive to bring a person’s awareness of the inner conflicts we need to balance in order to live more successfully? Is not therapy in general a means to bring inner balance, help us learn to navigate those inner conflicts that are really so necessary for growth, for resolution, for connection with others.
